The law is changing.
Digital Waste Tracking becomes mandatory for permitted waste receiving sites from 1 October 2026 (January 2027 in Scotland and Northern Ireland), replacing paper transfer notes with a single digital record for every load. If you operate a permitted site, you must log each movement using approved software — and regulators will be able to spot gaps in real-time.
The Risk
Non-compliance carries real penalties. Regulators can issue fixed fines of £1,000 (rising to £1,500 if paid late), or variable fines with no cap in England (up to £40,000 in Scotland) for serious or repeated breaches — plus enforcement costs and, in the worst cases, criminal prosecution with unlimited fines.
